quicken cannot open ths data file because it is being used

quicken cannot open ths data file because it is being used by another application. i have checked the device manager as well as ll files and cannot see any other applications that are using the data file i am trying to open

search for the data file from the start menu search box

by searching for

 

*.qdf

 

when you find your data file

right click on it select copy

browse to my documents

right click on a blank spot and select paste

 

the file should show up where you copied it to

right click on it and select rename

give it a new name while keeping the .qdf at the end

 

open quicken and go to

file / open

browse to my documents

select the file that you copied and gave a new name to

 

If it does not open give me the exact word for word error message that you got as well as the version of quicken that you are using.

FOLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS BUT WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE FILE I GOT THE SSAME ERROR MSG: "QUICKEN CANNOT OPEN THE DATA FILE BECAUSE IT IS IN USE BY SOME OTHER APPLICATION.

PLEASE CLOSE THAT APPLICATION AND TRY AGAIN"

I AM USING QUICKEN 2011 PREMIER VERSION.

I DOUBLE CHECKED TASK MANAGER AND IT SHOWS NOTHING ELSE RUNNING.

you tried to open the NEW file that you created and you got the same message ?

 

browse to it and right click on the file and select properties. make sure that it does not say read only or system

 

also try disabling your anti virus software and if you have some sort of automatic backup that provides a mirror copy turn that off too.

 

If none of that works try

 

A. in quicken go to file / file operations / validate file and see if it will validate it

 

B. go to control panel / add remove programs / click on the quicken program and select change and then the repair option

1--new file is not "write protected" and "system" is not shown re properties.

2--all virus software is and has been disabled as well as automatic backups.

3--file will not "validate".

4--went to control panel, clicked on add/remove programs, selected the quicken program but do not see any "change" or "repair" options, only the "remove" option is showing.

5--am still getting the error message saying that cannot open the data file because it is being used by another application!!

You went to file / open and selected the new file that you copied to my documents correct ?

 

Try starting the computer in safe mode with command prompt by repeatedly tapping the F8 key when the computer first starts. and selecting safe mode with command prompt

 

from the black screen with c:\xxxxx> prompt

type

chkdsk /f

 

let it run

 

that will check the drive for bad sectors and bad indexes that may have the file flagged wrong.

I AM USING THE NEW FILE I CREATED IN MY DOCUMENTS AS PER YOUR INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS.

RAN CHKDSK/F FROM SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT AS INSTRUCTED.

THIS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM.

 

DO YOU THINK THAT BY DELETING QUICKEN 100% FROM MY PC--AND THEN REINSTALLING THE PROGRAM--THE PROBLEM CAN BE FIXED???

You can try it but my guess is that the data file is corrupted and you are going to have to restore a backup.

 

I would try that first. If it gives you the same error then try reinstalling the program. If the backup works than it was almost definately a problem with the data file

Are you logging in with an administrator account ?

If you have quicken set up to do automatic updates turn that off.

I AM NOT LOGGING IN WITH AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT

 

AUTOMATIC UPDATES HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF SOME TIME AGO.

 

WHEN I TRIED TO REINSTALL FROM MY BACKUP DISC IT RUNS FOR ABOUT 3 MINUTES AND THEN GIVES ME THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE: "UNABLE TO CREATE THE DESTINATION DATA FILE"

 

CAN YOU ADVISE RE CREATING A DESTINATION FILE BEFORE I TRY OTHER FIXES?

I think if you log into windows with an account that has administrative priviledges your entire problem may be solved right there but you are not going to be able to do anything like reinstalling a program if you dont have administrative rights.

There is something wrong with your permissions.

It is the big green arrow on the left dont take anything else

 

You can run everthing on the first page it wont hurt but it will flag a bunch of errors on the ie because it hasnt been updated for the new versions. You can just ignore them

 

on the bottom of the screen is a little icon that looks like a hammer

click that and you will get a tools menu

under that one of the selections is REPAIR PERMISSIONS

run that.

Did you just reinstall the quicken software ?

 

It may not be updated to the latest release

download the mondo patch for 2011 from this link that should get it up to the newest release

I RAN QCLEAN TO DELETE ALL QUICKEN FILES.

I RAN "SEARCH" FOR ANY REMAINING QUICKEN FILES.

CONFIRMED ALL QUICKEN FILES ARE DELETED.

 

I RELOADED THE QUICKEN PROGRAM.

I RAN THE MONDO PATCH FOR QUICKEN 2011.

 

I OPENED THE QUICKEN PROGRAM.

I RESTORED MY WIFE'S BACKUP FILE WITH NO PROBLEM.

 

WHEN I TRIED TO RESTORE MY DATA FILE I GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR MESSAGE: UNABLE TO CREATE A DESTINATION FILE"

ok getting better.

 

try the restore again. You should be able to select the name and location for the destination file

 

make it something very simple like resquick and put it in My documents or in a new folder that you create under the c drive or under my documents

 

that way you know that you have access rights to the new folder and that it wont have a name that conflicts with a file that is already there.
