This project is completed in three stages

The first two assignments (Stages I and II of the project) are worth 100 points each.

Theory: There should be theory provided throughout all stages of this business plan to substantiate decisions made. All theory must be cited following APA format guidelines (APA Manual 5th or 6th edition). Anything copied word for word must be inside quotes and properly cited in text and on the reference list according to APA format guidelines. Any information that is not your own thought (theory) must also be cited. There should be no more than 5% of quoted material (information copied word for word) in any of these three assignments.

Introduction: The purpose is to: a) introduce the subject and its importance; and b) preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be covered.

Conclusion: Summarizes the main ideas and major support points from the body of your paper. This is not simply rephrasing the introduction or reviewing what was shared in the paper, but providing a closing paragraph for the reader.

All papers must follow these formatting guidelines.

Double-spaced

1 inch margins (on all sides)

Times New Roman or Arial, size 12 font

Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure should be correct.

Title page includes: 1) title of the document; 2) your name; and 3) Keller Graduate School centered, double spaced.

Headers are helpful throughout the paper to insure all assignment criteria is included, helps with topical flow, and keeps paper organized.

Castle's Family Restaurant has eight restaurants in the Northern California area with approximately 300-340 employees. Most of the employees are part time with approximately 40% of them full time. The operations manager, Jay Morgan, also acts as the HR manager and travels to each location each week to take care of scheduling, recruiting, hiring, and answering questions for the employees as needed. He also takes care of payroll using an Excel spreadsheet and has a computer application to print payroll checks. Mr. Morgan approaches you, an HR Consultant, for a proposal. Due to the increase in gasoline costs, he would like to greatly reduce his travel time for visiting each location each week and wonders if there is anything you can suggest to him to help him complete his HR tasks in a cost-effective manner. He hopes there is some way he can do part of his HR tasks from his office instead of traveling to each location.

Stage I (due Week 2)

Using the case scenario above, provide an assessment of the current business. Describe the company in terms of size, type of business, etc. Explain why you think an HRIS is needed. As the owner of your own HR consulting firm, write a 2-4 page paper that includes the following paper headings, which are denoted in call caps.

BUSINESS ASSESSMENT: The name, type, and size of business you're assisting; make assumptions in your business description using theory as needed and include the information in your paper for this case scenario. These assumptions would include background about a restaurant work environment and industry.

IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS: Review all HR problems identified. I recommend making a list of HR functions that you believe could be more efficient based on the information provided in the scenario. From that list, choose one HR function for analysis, which will be the main focus for your business plan. You want to explain why you chose that HR function as your first item, substantiate with theory.

HRIS NEEDS ASSESSMENT: Explain how automation might create a more efficient process from the HR function chosen. How might an HRIS application assist the business?

Provide a detailed description of the HRIS application(s) chosen for the business. What "type" of HRIS might create a more efficient process for the HR function chosen? You should have a good review of the scenario, conducted some research on HRIS systems, and now your next step is to choose a type of HRIS. Share the "type" of system you plan to implement to help your customer. This must be substantiated in this paper to your customer from a theoretical perspective.

HRIS VENDOR CHOICE: Now that you have an HRIS type chosen, you need to now conduct research to find an HRIS vendor. You want to do a compare and contrast in this section of at least two vendors. Then, choose a vendor. Explain why you chose this vendor over another/others. Include the web address and proper citations for the vendor applications compared. You must have theory to support your decision.

Stage III (Final Project, due Week 7)

At this point of the project, you have identified the problem and a technology solution for the business. Now you want the business accept the idea.

Using your text, the previous stages completed with feedback provided, and the business plan template (see Doc Sharing), write a business plan to give to your customer, which details the risks, assumptions, impact, etc., of the proposed implementation of the HRIS.

This stage of the project should be a professional document that you would present to a customer leadership team to accept your business plan.

Do not copy and paste Stage I and Stage II information into this Final Course Project. Stages I and II are considered raw data. You are now finalizing and summarizing. You are applying critical thinking skills to the data you've collected.

Here are the guidelines for the research paper:

Please review the following information. Your final research paper is not due until Week 8, but you should start thinking about topics now.

Your research paper will be about 2500 words, approximately 10 pages. You may choose your own topic, and please ask your teacher for guidance as far as what topics may be appropriate for this paper. Some choices work better than others. The APA (American Psychological Association) is the style required for the cover page, citations, paraphrasing and your references page.

You will begin writing the research paper in Week 4 (when you will write the outline); however, you should push yourself to conduct research in your chosen area from the beginning of the course.

Choosing Your Topic

Select a topic of your choice for this paper. You can write about the same topic or you can write about a variety of topics in each of the short papers assigned in Week 2 and Week 3. If you choose to write about the same topic area for all three papers, you may incorporate those papers into your final research paper. However, it is challenging and interesting to write on a variety of topics. One idea is to save the topic you are most interested in learning about for your final paper.

The Research Paper Deadlines

The first three pages of your paper will be due to your teacher at the end of Week 6. Your completed rough draft will be due at the beginning of Week 7 for peer review in class. This is a graded activity. Complete the final draft of the research paper and post it in the Dropbox by 11:59 p.m. (MT) on Thursday, Week 8 (250 points).

More Research Paper Information:

• You need to use at least ten sources; they must be academic, with a maximum of three Web sites and at least seven other references (the DeVry library online does not count as a Web site). We will discuss the credibility of sources. Please ask your teacher if you are not sure if a source is academic and verifiable or not.

Organizing your Problem-Solution Essay:

All the writing you have already done for this course has helped you learn the use of the persuasive pattern of CLAIM, REASONS, and EVIDENCE. This essay uses that pattern. Here are some suggestions for organizing your essay with that pattern:

1. Open with an attention grabbing episode-a short narrative or story that illustrates the problem/solution thesis. (Brief)

2. Clearly state and define the problem. Provide some evidence that the problem exists. (Perhaps 10%-20% of the essay.)

3. Make the THESIS and CLAIM clear in the essay introduction by clearly stating the preferred solution and the main REASONS in the essay WHY the solution is preferred. Also, the introduction should include an essay map. This is a part of the introduction that provides a brief overview of the rest of the essay including a brief statement of any alternate claims that will be discussed. (Brief)

4. Explain at least one opposing alternate solution that is widely supported. Explain them in such a way that the reader knows you understand other solutions-other points of view. That is, be reasonable and courteous. Use REASONS and EVIDENCE. (Perhaps 10%-20% of the essay.)

5. Explain your proposed solution in a convincing, academic argument that draws on documented research sources to provide evidence in support of the solution. Organize your argument by REASONS WHY. Use EVIDENCE. Your argument-your convincing reasoning-is the key to a fine essay. Be knowledgeable. Provide persuasive amounts of supporting evidence gleaned from verifiable research sources. (At least 50% of the essay.)

6. Close your essay with some statement of the significance of the claim and major points for the reader. What is the point that the reader should remember?

Research Requirements--The essay must:

? Use at least eight -8- documented sources. (Dictionaries and Wikipedia can be used, but can't be counted as part of the 8 sources.)

? Use three scholarly articles from the Academic Search Complete database in the Strayer online Learning Resource Center (LRC).

? Use two popular (not scholarly) sources from the Academic Search Complete databases in the Strayer online Learning Resource Center (LRC).

These requirements mean that five of the eight required sources must come from the Academic Search Complete database. If this is a problem for your topic, let me know and we might develop a compromise. Without an extended conversation with me and permission from me, your professor, this will rule will apply. Not having at least five sources documented in the Academic Search Complete database will greatly reduce the final grade and might cause the essay to have a failing grade.

? All eight of the articles can come from Academic Search Complete, if you wish.

? Substantial use of research sources is required. Minor points and/or one quotation are NOT substantial uses. Instead, a thorough discussion of at least one major point is needed.

2. Academic Essays in APA format-Guidelines and Samples.

The Turnitin Originality Report: This gives a percentage of the portion of your essay that duplicates other texts. This number includes the duplication involved in your accurate citations and References list. If it is more than 15%, then the essay contains too many of other people's words-it is not your essay and not your reasoning. You will have to reduce the number of quotations and paraphrase or summarize almost all the material from duplicated sources. If the Originality Report score is too high, the essay grade is reduced.

Plagiarism: If the duplicated sources involve plagiarism, the essay grade will either be greatly reduced or will be a zero, depending on the kind of plagiarism.

8. Eight Research Sources Total Including Three Scholarly Sources

Learning to use Academic Search Complete is one of the Learning Outcomes and Requirements of this course, so the essay must make substantial use of at least eight substantial research sources.

• Five of the eight substantial sources must come from Academic Search Complete or the grade is greatly reduced or is a failing grade.
• The three scholarly sources must come from Academic Search Complete. See Keys for Writers pp. 119-20 for information on scholarly sources.
• Two of the substantial sources that are not scholarly sources must also come from the Academic Search Complete database.
• Because Wikipedia, encyclopedia articles, and dictionaries are not substantial sources for academics, they can not count as part of the eight research sources. You may use more than eight sources, which means you can use Wikipedia, encyclopedia articles, and dictionaries sparingly in addition to your eight substantial sources.
• Sources must be current: The essay is not persuasive if the information is out-of-date; thus, the grade is reduced. Much information from research is regularly displaced by more current information. For instance, changes in the population will change most statistics and spending patterns, which changes many of the things that are being discussed in some essays. Usually current means sources from the last two years-depending on the kind of information it might extend back to four years. If you want to use a source that is more than two years old, you need to send the professor an email explaining why the source is still credible. I will let you know if it is still a credible source.
• Paraphrase or summary: Information from research is integrated into the writer's essay by paraphrasing or summarizing the source. The information is written in the writer's own words, without any kind of plagiarism. Inaccurate summaries and paraphrases reduce the essay's grade.
• Quotations are to be used only when the words are powerfully irreplaceable. Avoid long quotations-you are writing the essay without using big chunks of other people's sentences. Any quotations must be well-integrated and accurately punctuated.

13. Length and Format Requirements:

• Length: The research paper should be a minimum of 7 pages in length, no more than 10 pages. This does NOT include the List of References or title page. The essay must be at least 2100 words without the title page and List of References.

If your essay isn't long enough, find and use another source. Don't use material that is vague or repetitive or irrelevant. Not meeting the length requirement reduces the grade.

• Format: The pages must be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12, and have one inch margins. Using this font and size, one page is usually about 300 words. Thus, the requirement is for 2100 words in 7 pages.
• Page Numbers: The essay must have page numbers on each page.

14. Document File Type- .RTF file : The document must be a Rich Text File with an .rtf extension. Use the "Save as Type" dialogue box to find and use the .rtf format in your word processing program. (The "Save as Type" box is near the very bottom of the "Save As" dialogue box.) If the essay is not saved in the .rtf format, it is not interchangeable between different word processing programs.

15. Editing: This must be a polished, formal essay. Be sure to do a final spell check to make sure you have NO spelling errors. However, this is not enough. You must find and correct grammatical errors by reading your essay aloud, slowly. The essay should be well-edited and as free as possible of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Use clear sentences to help the reader understand. Place in-text citations and short quotations in sentences accurately and clearly.

16. Clear Sentences and Style: Generally, the sentences foster reader comprehension by using active verbs combined with subjects that come early in the sentence. The vocabulary, tone, and format should be appropriate to the audience and purpose. The sentences should flow smoothly using effective transitions. There should be variety in sentence pattern.

17. Paragraphing: Be sure the paragraphing and indentation help the reader to see how the essay is organized. Each paragraph should be a separate topic-when the paragraph changes the reader knows the topic is changing. Provide some transitions that help the reader move from paragraph to paragraph.
