I have Magnavox model 42MF52ID/37 TV that takes 15 minutes

Resolved Question:

I have Magnavox model 42MF52ID/37 TV that takes 15 minutes now to turn on. Tries from the start but flashes on/off on the screen but not the light indicator.  Turns back on fine if warm and not left off less than an hour.  Checked all cables and power supply.  replaced Power surge and tried different outlet, as well as shutting off by switch and sleep setting.  Occasionally lose audio, but that fixes with a skip back or forward in programing.  The signal is there but cuts out sometimes.  Biggest problem is how long it takes to turn on.

Jack :

Hi and welcome to justanswer.

Jack :

From your description it does sound like your power supply circuit is defective and in your case weak capacitors could be the cause.

Jack :

That board could be repaired or replaced

Jack :

If you`d like to work on this yourself i could upload pictures to identify that board and the components that are the most likely to have failed.

Jack :

I will wait for a while(standby) to see if you become available for chat, just send me a reply ,and i will be notified and be with you ASAP.

Customer:

Yes please upload or send in e-mail to me. I'm available mementarily, but must leave shortly, and can continue later this evening.

Jack :

Hello, i was just about to go out myself so you could get back to me later and in the mean time i will upload the infos ?

Jack :

Talk to you later.

Jack :

Hi again

Jack :

By the way your model number is XXXXX not PF52I

Jack :

Here is a picture of your power supply board, you will see that i circled and pointed to some capacitors.
I`d like you to look at them closely and tell me if some of them(or all of them) appear to have slightly bulging/rounded tops.
Their tops should be perfectly flat.

Customer:

Jack, I'm back...

Jack :

hello

Jack :

Did you look at that picture ?

Customer:

Printing it out, yes. Model # XXXXX XXXXX

Customer:

SORRY...42MF521D/37

Jack :

Do you have the back cover off the tv ?

Customer:

NO TV WEIGHS 78 LBS. I WEIGH 105...WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR HELP, THIS WEEKEND. It's hanging on the wall.

Jack :

O.k no problem,

Jack :

In any case that circuit is the one that i suspect and it can be repaired or replaced

Customer:

does a strip across the bottom on the back come off?

Jack :

You will have to take off pretty much every screws in sight

Customer:

I have the parts list from Magnavox. they are all Phillips parts.

Jack :

Yes same company and i will give you all the part numbers you will need anyway

Jack :

So if you get a chance to look at those capacitors this weekend then just message me

Customer:

823827736059 capacitor and 823827735013 capacitor are listed. I will. thanks. are they soldered in?

Jack :

Yes they are but we`ll start with a visual inspection

Customer:

ok, talk to you then.

Customer:

Connie

Jack :

o.k then Connie ,good night

Customer:

Jack, I'm here. Visual shows single capacitor ok/flat but group of three all have slight bulge or rounding of the top, convex? Three are #2079, 2081, 2082. Board has 7 other spots of varnish on back side....cleaned somewhat w/alcohol. Board #3138(NNN) NNN-NNNN Bar Code sticker # XXXXX 168 66991, top, and #PAP XXXXXXXXX on bottom of sticker.

Customer:

At last check, last night, TV no longer turns on. Tries but no cigar even after trying for hours. Interestingly enough does not shut off either w/remote or power button. Had to unplug power cord.

Customer:

I'll wait awhile and hope you come online...:-)

hello

Jack :

hi

Customer:

I'm ready

Jack :

just reading what you wrote

Customer:

VG

Jack :

O.k first ,don`t worry about the varnish, it`s normal
Can you give me the value of those caps ?
I.E 1000mfd(uf) 10 volts , 470mfd@25V etc ?

Customer:

Will look

Jack :

These are generic parts ,so you don`t need the manual or the company part numbers.

Customer:

1500uF 85V

Jack :

that must be 25 volts ?

Customer:

will look again

Jack :

or 35 volts

Customer:

35V

Jack :

the 3 of them ?

Customer:

can only read 2, but yes.

Jack :

O.k then these values are not standard but they can be replaced by the better and more standard valur of 2200uf /35 volts that you can find in any repair shop or even radio shack

Jack :

If you want to make a test tonight then get a hair dryer and heat them up for 3 to 4 minutes and try the tv again

Jack :

If they are not too far gone ,your tv should start up

Customer:

ok, read all three/seperated capzon 1500uF 35v

Jack :

O.k that sounds good, how about the 4th one that looks good ?

Customer:

will ck

Customer:

2200uF/25V

Jack :

I was thinking that while you are there you just as well should replace them all, they will cost about $10 altogether !

Customer:

sounds good. What about the cost of the board?

Jack :

If you`re not equipped to replace them then you could take the board to a repair shop and ask them to replace them, it should take them 10 minutes and perhaps cost you $30 parts included

Jack :

can you hold a sec for ther price of the board ?

Customer:

sounds great, any suggestions where to take them?

Jack :

Any tv repair shop in your area

Customer:

I think I can replace them, but will wait for cost of board & where.

Jack :

The board itself cost around $100

Jack :

Looking for some place who has it in stock

Customer:

Do I get form Magnavox?

Jack :

No that would be from electronic parts suppliers

Customer:

ok

Customer:

online?

Jack :

This is your board number; 313815866991 , if you want to do your own shopping

Customer:

thankx

Customer:

the board has one number different....313816866991

Jack :

There are other ones but they want around $300 for it

Jack :

Thats o.k it does happen that they update the versions but it is the same anyway in your case

Customer:

ok,thank you Jack. I just ask for the 2200uF/35V and 25V on the capacitors?

Jack :

Yes that would be it, but can you give me a minute again ?

Customer:

sure

Jack :

O.k thanks ,was just looking to see if the board is the same and that looks good,

Jack :

You could also try that test with the hair dryer

Customer:

can i replace the 2200uF/25 w/2200uF/35 or is that not a good idea?

Jack :

No thats even better and less complicated

Jack :

the higher the value and voltage the better

Customer:

Yes iwas thinking that too!

Jack :

the only thing is that they grow up in size,so you cannot go too high or they won`t fit physically

Customer:

ok. will measure twice! Looks like the repacement of the 2200uF/25 will be fine.

Jack :

Yes i was talking something like 10,000uf for example :)

Jack :

They will fit just fine up to 50 volts

Jack :

Make sure to respect the polatities though !!

Jack :

polarity

Customer:

oh yes....will sign off for tonight. Thank you Jack. Will let you know of progress. Saw the warning arrows will not positions of leads.

Customer:

note posions.

Jack :

Yes and they will be indicated on the board itself

Jack :

In any case you will receive an email after this chat is closed and there will be a link to get back to me anytime if you have any questions.

Customer:

must be getting tired. Will note positions of leads. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Jack :

O.k then you`re welcome and you can close this chat from your end with the accept button if you are satisfied with my answer and have no other questions at this time.

Customer:

will test & let you know of progress. Good night

Jack :

O.k good night

Customer:
